Many of our education programs, resources, and content is available virtually as well as in-person.
Museum in a Suitcase Program
Learn about the Oregon Nikkei experience with your students through primary sources, including historical documents, photographs, illustrations, and artifacts. A teacher guide with resources and lesson plans aligned to Common Core Standards is also included.
The suitcase contents cover the following topics:
- Early Japanese Immigration to Oregon
- Creating Communities – Life in Nihonmachi (Portland’s Japantown)
- Incarceration Stories – World War II, Executive Order 9066, civil rights, evacuation process, Portland detention center, transfer to WRA concentration camps, Life in a domestic concentration camp, U.S. military, postwar resettlement process, and redress
The Museum in a Suitcase is available by itself for teacher-led instruction or accompanied by a JAMO speaker. The Suitcase contents can also be made available to educators as digital files.
Speakers Bureau
Japanese American Museum of Oregon speakers are available for in-person and virtual classroom visits, school assemblies, civic organizations, and other events. Our speakers are well-versed to talk about the history of Japanese Americans (and Asian Americans) in Oregon and Nikkei experiences during World War II, as well as the broader topics of civil rights, citizenship, and the Constitution.
We also offer an array of educational resources for educators. Examples include:
Digital Citizenship and Japanese American History Curriculum
A seven-lesson curriculum that addresses critical questions about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, especially as they relate to the media. The experiences of Japanese Americans during World War II provide a relevant context for this study.
Minoru Yasui: From Roots to Results Curriculum
A five-lesson curriculum that introduces students to experiences of Japanese Americans in Oregon during World War II and to the work of Minoru Yasui, the Oregon attorney who challenged the curfew placed on that community in 1942.
Never Give Up! Minoru Yasui and the Fight for Justice Documentary and Educational Package
A documentary about the life and work of civil rights leader Minoru Yasui, the only Oregonian to have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Directed by Holly Yasui and narrated by George Takei.
Resource Guides
Book, film, and online resources for K-12 students and adult audiences are available by request.
