May 6th is the anniversary of the grand opening the Japanese American Museum of Oregon’s new building at Naito Center. This year we will celebrate by offering free admission to all guests on that day during our regular open hours, 11am-3pm. Free Museum Day We realize that there are many who have not yet visited our new museum–here is the prefect opportunity to experience the new space, the many updated features of our permanent exhibition, and our current temporary exhibition, Dream Refuge for Children Imprisoned. Even if you have visited before, we welcome you back for this anniversary celebration. May 6 is also a significant date in the history of Japanese Americans in Oregon–on the previous day in 1942, local Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated to the Portland Detention Center, later to be moved to various concentration camps. On May 6, Portland was the first major city on the west coast to have incarcerated all of its residents of Japanese ancestry.
