To commemorate the 82nd anniversary of Executive Order 9066, the Japanese American Museum of Oregon, University of Oregon, Portland JACL, Honolulu JACL, and McMenamin’s present Removed By Force and will have a panel discussion following with the filmmakers and attorneys who fought for redress.
This documentary memorializes the unique and relatively unknown cases of about 1,500 Hawai`i Americans of Japanese Ancestry who were not incarcerated, but forcibly removed from their homes during the war. These unique cases were separate and apart from the 2,000 Japanese Americans interned at the Sand Island and Honouliuli incarceration camps on O`ahu. The film also focuses on the Honolulu JACL’s (Japanese American Citizens League) and NAPABA’s (National Asian Pacific American Bar Association) efforts in seeking redress compensation from the US Department of Justice.
Hawai`i filmmakers Ryan Kawamoto and Bill Kaneko co-produced this documentary. The Honolulu JACL received a national grant from the US National Park Service Japanese American Confinement Sites (JACS) Grant Program to produce the documentary and is supported by various corporate sponsors like Hawaiian Electric Industries, Bank of Hawai`i, First Hawaiian Bank, and Island Insurance Companies.
